Did you know that researchers at the Suicide Prevention Resource Center found that the 2nd highest suicide rates were highest among individuals working in construction?  Suicide risk was also elevated among those working in major occupations: construction and extraction jobs.

Industries and occupations at increased suicide risk would benefit from workplace prevention strategies that promote employee wellness. Join Dr. Vince Hafeli as he discusses the importance of mental health and wellness in construction.

Scott Kirkwood, Safety Manger, Welch & Rushe & Chair, NUCA of DC Safety & Training Committee

Scott Kirkwood has over a decade of dedicated experience in heavy civil and mechanical construction safety, serving projects throughout Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia. Scott has developed a strong foundation in all aspects of jobsite safety, with a focus on ensuring compliance, cultivating a strong safety culture, and driving continuous improvement across operations. His expertise includes conducting thorough site safety audits, implementing comprehensive safety plans, and developing both Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs) and Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) tailored to diverse project scopes. He also specializes in building and delivering engaging safety training curricula that are practical, relevant, and designed to meet the real-world needs of field personnel.

Kirkwood has extensive hands-on experience in underground utility safety, particularly in the areas of excavation safety, fall protection, personal protective equipment (PPE), rigging and lifting operations, traffic control, and crane safety. Scott is well-versed in hazard communication standards, first aid/CPR response, and general hazard awareness training—ensuring that crews are both protected and prepared. He holds the Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) certification and currently serve as the Chairman of the National Utility Contractors Association (NUCA) of Washington, D.C. chapter.

Keynote Speaker:

Dr. Vince Hafeli, D.B.A., serves as the President of Ajax Paving Industries of Florida, a leading asphalt paving and construction services provider. His Doctoral research at the University of South Florida focused on the critical issue of suicide in the construction industry, highlighting his commitment to addressing mental health challenges in this sector. As an international speaker, author, and dedicated mental health advocate, Vince is passionate about raising awareness and reducing mental illness stigma. His deep understanding of individuals’ mental health challenges has made him a prominent voice in the advocacy community. He collaborates with various organizations and advocacy groups to dismantle the barriers that prevent people from seeking the mental health support they need. Vince is renowned for his thought-provoking and impactful keynote talks on mental health and suicide prevention. He inspires audiences to take action and fosters a culture of support and understanding.
